On September 24, a groundbreaking scientific collaboration between two prestigious Indian institutions was launched in Kolkata. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, and the Tata Medical Center, Kolkata, has introduced CHAVI, the nation′s first fully annotated, relational, de-identified cancer image library. Introducing CHAVI - Comprehensive Archive of Imaging is a tremendous boost for cancer research in India. It will give researchers from around the world unrestricted access to de-identified patient images and necessary clinical data.

During the inauguration, a fascinating panel discussion led by numerous notable experts took place.

CHAVI is the first imaging biobank from India that is solely dedicated to oncological imaging. The project was created as a part of the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) as a research collaboration between the Tata Medical Center in Kolkata and the IIT Kharagpur. Its goals are to create a national image biobank and to lay the groundwork for future research collaborations across the country′s top cancer institutes.

Director Tata Medical Center Kolkata Dr. P Arun said, "Data from digital imaging is critical to patient care, and with today′s technology, it also forms the substrate for future research to improve patient outcomes. It also allows evaluation of the efficacy of current treatment protocols. CHAVI from Tata Medical Center, developed in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur colleagues, gives us the platform to enhance AI-Radiomic research using freely available annotated digital oncological imaging."
